A patio coating turns bare outdoor concrete into a sealed, finished floor. We coat backyard patios, covered patios, back porches, front porches and entry steps. The slab around an outdoor kitchen or fire pit gets the same work. Our standard epoxy patio coating is an epoxy base coat under a UV stable topcoat.

Standard epoxy is not UV stable. In direct sun it ambers and yellows, and with more exposure it can chalk and lose its gloss. A Houston patio sits in strong sun most of the year.
So on a patio, epoxy is the base and a UV stable coat goes on top. Epoxy bonds to concrete best, which is why it goes down first. The topcoat is polyaspartic or a UV stable polyurea. Standard polyurea yellows in UV light, so an outdoor polyurea topcoat has to be a UV stable grade.
When you need the patio back in a day, we can install a full polyaspartic system instead. It cures fast and holds its color in the sun. For most patios, the epoxy base is still the build we recommend. Our guide shows how the three chemistries compare.
Full-broadcast flake is the most common finish for a patio floor coating. Vinyl chips go into the wet epoxy base, and a clear topcoat locks them in. The chips hide stains and old patches, and they leave a light texture underfoot. Our flake epoxy floors page covers the blends: gray, tan, black, blue and multicolor.
Solid color gives a smooth, even surface in gloss, satin or flat. A quartz broadcast gives a sandy texture with more grip. Smooth coatings get slick when wet, so we can add aluminum oxide or a fine grit to the topcoat. For wet areas that need more texture, see our anti-slip floor coatings.
Some patios only need color. Stained concrete is the lighter option: a stain colors the slab, and a sealer goes on top. Another Google reviewer had us stain their back patio to hide old stains left from move-in.
Most Houston homes sit on slabs over clay soil that swells and shrinks, so patios crack and joints open. Every patio or porch floor coating starts with diamond grinding, which opens the concrete so the base coat can bond. Then we repair the cracks and joints. An old sealer or coating gets ground off in the same step.
Next comes a moisture check, because moisture trapped under a coating can make it fail early. When the reading calls for it, a vapor barrier primer goes down first. Our guide explains why epoxy floors peel in Houston.
Outdoor work also needs a dry slab and a dry weather window. Rain on bare concrete or on a fresh coat means the job waits, so the install date follows the forecast. Dew counts too. Coating standards want the surface at least 5 degrees F above the dew point, from prep through cure.

We measure the slab, look at its condition and run a moisture test. Then you get a quote for the system we recommend.
Pick the color and finish from samples. Options include full flake, solid color, quartz and metallic.
We diamond grind the slab and repair cracks and joints. A vapor barrier primer goes down when the moisture test calls for it. Then comes the base coat, the flake or pigment broadcast, and the clear topcoat.
Most garages are a two-day job, and a metallic floor takes about three days. We do a final walk-through and tell you when to drive on the floor.
