Stained concrete floors color the slab you already have. An acid stain reacts with the concrete and leaves a permanent, mottled color. A concrete dye carries fine pigment into the surface for a more even tone. Either way the color lives inside the slab, and a sealer goes on top to take the wear.

Paint and coatings sit on top of concrete as a film. Stain works the other way around. An acid stain is a mild acid that carries metallic salts. Those salts react with the free lime in the concrete and form a color that belongs to the slab.
Because the color sits inside the concrete, it will not chip or peel the way floor paint does. The color also stays clear enough to see the slab through it. You still read the shading and trowel marks underneath, which is what gives stained concrete its marbled look. A dye skips the chemical reaction, so its tone comes out more even.
Stain adds no thickness and no wear layer. The sealer handles all of that. It is also why stain will not cover a cracked or patched slab. The color usually makes those spots easier to see.
Most Houston homes sit on a slab poured right on the ground. Under that slab is Gulf Coast clay that holds water. Moisture vapor moves up through the concrete all year. That vapor is the main reason floor finishes fail here.
So the sealer choice matters. A film sealer lays a clear layer over the surface and gives deeper color and gloss. Trapped vapor under that film can cloud it or turn it white. A penetrating sealer soaks in and lets the slab breathe, which suits damp slabs and outdoor concrete.
We check the slab for moisture before we pick a concrete sealer. Outdoor sealer wears faster than sealer inside the house, so porches and driveways get refreshed sooner. A sealed patio gets slick when it is wet. We can mix a slip resistant additive into the sealer, or see anti slip floor coatings for wet commercial floors.
Stain takes the slab as it is. If the concrete is spalled, patched in several spots or soaked with old oil, the color shows all of it. A floor like that usually does better under an epoxy floor coating.
A coating builds a new surface on top of the concrete. Flake epoxy floors hide slab flaws under color chips and add grip underfoot. Metallic epoxy floors give an interior a marbled look that stain cannot copy. Garages get coated for a different reason, since hot tires and oil are hard on a sealed slab.
Where a slab reads damp, a coating can start with a moisture vapor barrier primer. Stain has no equivalent step. We run a moisture test either way and tell you which finish fits your floor. Both come out of the same free estimate.
