Driveway color that soaks into the slab

A stained concrete driveway takes its color from the slab itself. Acid stain reacts with the lime in the concrete and turns the gray slab a mottled earth tone. Because the color is part of the concrete, it will not peel off under your tires. A clear sealer over the color handles the traffic and weather.

We stain and seal existing concrete driveways across Greater Houston, plus the walk, apron and steps that tie into them. Epoxy One has installed floor coatings here since 2008, and past jobs include an onyx stained driveway. Driveways are one part of our stained concrete floors work. The garage beside the driveway usually gets a coating instead, which is where epoxy garage floors come in.

What We Handle

  • Acid stain and a clear sealer on existing concrete driveways
  • The front walk, garage apron and entry steps that tie into the driveway
  • Cleaning and degreasing before any color goes down
  • Crack repair, plus grinding where the surface needs opening up
  • Old sealer taken off first so the stain can soak in
  • Stain colors including Copper, Bronze, Cocoa, Terracotta, Graphite and Onyx
  • Film or penetrating sealers, picked after a moisture check on the slab
  • A slip resistant additive in the sealer, and resealing when it wears thin

Is concrete driveway staining right for your slab?

Stain suits a driveway because the color becomes part of the slab. It only reaches the top layer of the concrete, though. Tires and weather slowly wear at it, so the clear sealer over it serves as the wear layer. Keep the sealer in good shape and the color underneath lasts.

Stain also has limits to know before you pick it. Acid stain is translucent, so it will not cover cracks, patches, oil spots or rust marks. A dark stain can even make a crack stand out more.

A driveway with lots of cracks, a flaking surface or many patches is a poor fit for stain. We will say so at the estimate. A sound older slab can be stained with the right prep. That means cleaning, degreasing, crack repair and grinding where the surface needs opening up.

Choosing driveway stain colors

Acid stain comes in subtle earth tones. Our stain chart includes Copper, Bronze, Cocoa, Terracotta, Graphite and Onyx, among others. Gray, brown and black are some of the most common colors for driveways.

Because the stain reacts with each slab, no two driveways come out exactly alike. Wide color swings are normal, and the sealer makes them stand out more. You choose from samples at the free on-site estimate.

Acid stain is the usual pick outdoors, since sunlight can fade a concrete dye over time. One color is the simplest look, and each added color adds to the cost.

Outdoor concrete stain and sealer in Houston weather

Because the sealer takes the wear, we match it to your slab. A film sealer deepens the color and adds gloss. A penetrating sealer soaks in with no shine and leaves the color as it is. Outdoor sealers also need to let moisture move out of the concrete, and we check the slab for moisture first.

Houston humidity and rain set the schedule. Moisture trapped under a film sealer can turn it white and cloudy, and rain on fresh sealer leaves spots. The slab has to be clean and dry, and dew runs heaviest in the morning. So the sealing day follows the forecast.

Strong sun yellows some lower grade sealers, so we use a sealer meant to stand up to UV. A glossy sealer on smooth concrete also gets slick when wet. For grip, we can add a slip resistant grit to the sealer as it goes on. On wet commercial floors, our anti slip floor coatings build grip with aluminum oxide or quartz.

How We Work

How a Job With Epoxy One Runs

From the first call or text to the walk-through on the finished floor, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Reach us at (281) 831-5656 and tell us about the floor. We book estimates on weekdays.

2

Free on-site estimate

We measure the slab, look at its condition and run a moisture test. Then you get a quote for the system we recommend.

3

Color and finish

Pick the color and finish from samples. Options include full flake, solid color, quartz and metallic.

4

Prep and coats

We diamond grind the slab and repair cracks and joints. A vapor barrier primer goes down when the moisture test calls for it. Then comes the base coat, the flake or pigment broadcast, and the clear topcoat.

5

Cure and walk-through

Most garages are a two-day job, and a metallic floor takes about three days. We do a final walk-through and tell you when to drive on the floor.

FAQ

Stained Driveways Questions, Answered

Common questions about stained driveways across Greater Houston, from Conroe to Alvin. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (281) 831-5656

Is it better to paint or stain a driveway?
For most driveways, stain. Paint is a film on top of the slab, and hot tires can peel it up. A glossy film on smooth concrete also turns slick when wet. Stain soaks in, so the color stays put while the sealer takes the wear.
How much does it cost to stain a concrete driveway?
Price follows the size of the driveway, plus any walk, apron or steps you add. Prep, crack repair, the number of colors and the sealer all move it too. Our stained concrete cost guide lays out national market ranges. For your driveway, estimates are free and quotes often come back within a day: call or text (281) 831-5656.
Can you stain a driveway with oil spots?
Oil keeps stain from soaking in, so the slab gets cleaned and degreased in prep. Old sealer comes off for the same reason. Stain is translucent, so a deep, old spot can still show through. We point those out at the estimate.
Can a new driveway be stained?
Yes, once the concrete has cured. Industry guides say new concrete needs 21 to 28 days to fully cure before staining. Color also tends to come out stronger on newer concrete than on old, weathered slabs. We set the stain date with your estimate.
Will the stain wear off under my car?
Not while the sealer is in good shape. The color is part of the slab, so it will not peel. What wears down is the sealer, and guides call for a fresh coat every two to four years. Hot tires can mark some sealers, and a degreaser may be all it takes to clean them.
Can the walk, steps and porch match the driveway?
Yes. The front walk, garage apron, entry steps and porch can all take the same stain. Separate slabs can take the same stain differently, so expect some shift in color between them. A back patio can be stained or get a coated system; see our patio coatings.

These guys did my garage floor back in November, Pablo really knows the technical knowledge and recommend a vapor barrier to be put down first. 3 months in and it still looks brand new. Went with Folsom color choice. Super easy to work with and plan around the drywall crew. Highly recommended!

I work for a custom home builder in the Houston area and we have been using Xpedite Coating for many years on our garage epoxy floors. They are very professional and timely and always leave the site clean after they are finished. I would highly recommend them for your next epoxy flooring need.
