An epoxy garage floor turns a dusty, stained slab into a hard surface you can mop clean. We coat two-car and three-car garages across Greater Houston, from our west Houston base out to Katy and Cypress. The usual build is full flake over an epoxy base with a clear topcoat. Garage floor paint is a thin film you roll on. Most do it yourself kits are mostly latex with a small share of epoxy in them. The film sits on top of the slab instead of bonding into it. That is why it lifts where the tires park.
Tires do the damage. Rubber heats up on a Houston drive, then contracts as it cools in your garage. The cooling tire grabs a weak film and pulls it off the concrete. Warm tires also give off plasticizers that soften a low grade coating.
A coating system works differently. We grind the concrete open first, then bond a 100 percent solids epoxy into it. The clear topcoat over that takes the wear. You clean the floor with a dust mop and a wet mop.
Day one is prep. We diamond grind the slab to bare concrete, which takes off old paint, glue and sealer. Cracks and control joints get filled and sanded flat. A moisture test then shows how much water vapor is moving up through the slab.
When the reading is high, a moisture vapor barrier primer goes down before the base coat. Houston slabs sit over damp clay, so we test every garage. One customer wrote in a Google review that a vapor barrier was recommended for his floor first.
Day two is color. The epoxy base coat goes down and the flake is broadcast into it while the epoxy is wet. A clear topcoat locks the finish in. When a schedule needs a one day install, we can build the whole floor with polyurea floor coatings or polyaspartic.
Houston stays humid most of the year and garage slabs run well past 90 degrees in summer. Garage doors face the sun for hours at a stretch. Plain epoxy yellows in that light, so the top layer has to be UV stable. We finish with a polyurethane or a polyaspartic topcoat over the epoxy base.
Most Houston homes sit on slab-on-grade over Gulf Coast clay. That clay swells with rain and shrinks in a dry spell, so slabs move and hairline cracks open. We fill those before coating. Moisture rising through the slab is the top reason floor coatings fail here.

Pick the color and finish from samples. Options include full flake, solid color, quartz and metallic.
We diamond grind the slab and repair cracks and joints. A vapor barrier primer goes down when the moisture test calls for it. Then comes the base coat, the flake or pigment broadcast, and the clear topcoat.
Most garages are a two-day job, and a metallic floor takes about three days. We do a final walk-through and tell you when to drive on the floor.
