A flake epoxy floor is a full broadcast of vinyl chips over an epoxy base coat. A clear topcoat locks the chips in and gives you the surface you walk on. It is the finish we install most often on epoxy garage floors in Houston homes. The chips hide what the slab looks like underneath and leave a light texture underfoot.
Chip blends for an epoxy flake floor run from soft gray and tan to black, blue and multicolor. You pick yours from samples at the free estimate. Before any coating goes down, we grind the slab and test the concrete for moisture. We have installed epoxy flooring in Houston since 2008, and flake is what homeowners ask for most.

The build has three layers. A pigmented epoxy base coat goes down first, rolled onto the ground slab. While that base is still wet, our crews broadcast vinyl chips by hand until the floor stops taking them. Installers call that a full broadcast, or broadcasting to refusal.
The next day we scrape the floor flat and vacuum up the loose chips. A good share of what was thrown comes back up, and that is normal on a full flake job. Then the clear topcoat rolls on and seals the chips into the floor.
What you end up with is a seamless floor with no grout lines and no edges to lift. The chip layer sits under the clear coat, so it will not wear off like floor paint.
Houston garages run hot and humid for most of the year. Cars come in soaked after a storm, and a smooth slab turns slick. The chip texture breaks that up and gives the floor grip when it is wet.
Most homes here sit on slab-on-grade concrete over Gulf Coast clay. Water moves up through that slab as vapor, and it is the top reason coatings fail here. So we test every floor and prime with a vapor barrier when the test calls for one. One customer wrote that we recommended that barrier under his garage before the coating went down.
Garage doors face the sun for hours a day, and a plain epoxy topcoat can yellow in that light. We finish flake garages with a polyaspartic topcoat or a polyurethane, both of which are UV stable. The finish also stands up to hot tire pickup, and a dust mop or a hose handles the cleaning.
There are dozens of blends to choose from. We install gray, tan, black, blue and mixed blends, and the mix sets the look of the room. A finer chip reads almost like stone from standing height. A larger chip gives a bolder, speckled floor.
A solid color floor shows every ripple and patch in the concrete under it. Flake does the opposite, because the chips break up the surface and old repairs stop showing. Metallic epoxy floors work a third way, with pigment worked into clear resin for a marble look. Those stay smooth, while a flake floor has texture you can feel.
